Entry from: Auckland, New Zealand Entry Title: "New Zealand - The North Island" Entry: "November 5th didn't exist for us. We set off at 11pm from Santiago, Chile on November 4th and landed at about 5am in Auckland, New Zealand on November 6th. Crossing the dateline meant we missed the entire day! I imagine we will claw back hours as we travel back home but for at least 2008 we definitely won't be able to "remember, remember the 5th of November"! In the shuttle bus on the way into Auckland the driver told us that their (hot) pies are something to behold. So, sure enough, when we got into town we put them to the test. And he was right. Kiwi pies are great. After various discussions with anyone interested in talking about the ins and outs of a good pie the conclusion was reached that their pies taste so good because meat is cheaper so they are packed full to the top rather than having a disappointing layer of air at the top. Auckland was quite a pretty city - with everything from mainstream shops to trendy boutique outlets and lively cafes and bars. There were plenty of attractive Victorian stone and wooden buildings especially in the suburbs. In the city the was a large south east Asian community which made for a abundance of cheap stir-fries which came as a welcome change to the beef and more beef ...
